About Me

I’m a 20 year old songwriter, actor and musician from Nanaimo, British Columbia and I have been the music director and pianist/vocalist for Unity Spiritual Centre of Nanaimo for the last 2 and a half years! I’ve played piano for 13 years, but in 2011, while participating in a musical theater production I found that I had a voice! Thrilled by this unexpected discovery, I started honing my voice through private lessons and further musicals, coaxing it through teenage adolescence and exploring the spectrum of my developing vocal range. Which I’m sure my neighbors enjoyed just as much as I did.

I am delighted to say that seven years, eighteen musicals, two short films, tons of hard work, a surprising lack of sleep, and one fabulously supportive mother has paid off. The most recent show I completed premiered in March 2018: Vancouver Island University’s “Into the Woods”. I had the honor of playing one of the leads, Jack, and I can’t begin to explain how much that show taught me about acting – it was by far the most difficult I’ve ever done, but also the most rewarding.

Fast-forward to 2018 and you’ll find me swimming (or perhaps drowning) in music notes. I just graduated on June 4th, 2018 with my Diploma in Jazz Studies from Vancouver Island University. It was an intense, spectacular experience, and I learned more than words can explain.

However, I’ve been exploring the world of songwriting on a much deeper level thanks to Unity’s weekly requests for a solo performance from me. Honored by the opportunity to perform, I frequently play and sing cover songs – but lately I’ve taken to the page and begun writing some spiritually charged music. A very dear friend and “Unitic” named Pat Clarkson was in the audience for one of my performances of original content, and she suggested that I submit my piece for a Posi Award. I had no idea what a Posi Award was until I did some research, and I was delighted to find out more.
After reading about the requirements for the application, I decided that my song “Take Only What You Need” would be an ideal submission. And now here we are!

So there we have it: One crash course in “Josh”. There will now be a short intermission if you would like to stretch your legs or purchase some expensive mineral water. Thank you.
