About Me
I have been writing and performing for over 40 years, and am enjoying it more than ever. I was born and raised in Oakland, California, and my music – your can hear it www.jonasmagrammusic.com – has both strong folk and R&B influences. People say my voice reminds them of Yusuf Islam (a.k.a. Cat Stevens) and my guitar playing is reminiscent of Richie Havens, two of my many music heroes.
I named my 2009 tour, Spreading the Light, but the truth is, it was as much about creating joy and healing hearts. Of course, one never performs in a vacuum, and the consciousness of the audience has everything to do with creating magic. Perhaps that’s why my music seems to have been so well received at Unity, since there is already so much love, light, joy, and wisdom there.
I have been married to my beloved wife, Sandra, for 28 years this month (November, 2009), and have three grown children and a one-year-old dog, Bruiser, who is my touring companion and roadie.
Though I embrace all loving traditions, my spiritual path began with learning Transcendental Meditation in the late 60’s, and studying with His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. And though I continue to embrace Maharishi’s knowledge to this day, I have benefited from the guidance of many other teachers as well. These include Master Jesus, Her Holiness Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi, Byron Katie, Eckhart Tolle, Sri Nisargadatta, and Satya Sai Baba, among others. I have all of them to thank for my music, and for my life.
I’ve recorded two CDs, Dancing in the Light and Freedom Train, both recorded with my Seventh Ray Band, eight extraordinary musicians whose love and talent pervades every song. My dream is that we all can tour together someday soon. Meanwhile, it is my great joy to work with the many loving and talented house musicians found at so many Unity churches.
And yes, I do offer lessons and workshops as well. I would be more than happy to provide a list of topics and sample recordings for those who are interested.
