I don't remember having any opinion on James Taylor's music one way or the other during his heyday in the early-70s. It wasn't a bad sound, but it wasn't the kind of complex rock-opera orchestration that really made me sit up and say "ooooh!" But last weekend, a neighbor threw an impromptu barbecue to christen his new pool deck and had a best-of Taylor CD piping through his new (impressive!) outdoor sound system. There was something so utterly comfortable about sitting out there on a mild evening, sipping wine with friends, with that so-very-familiar sound of Taylor's voice and guitar in the background.
The very next day, I found "JT" at Amazon for a ridiculously low price, it arrived today, and I have it playing now. I am happy to report that I do now have an opinion on James Taylor's music. I like it very much! :)

Now that you have discovered the melodic music and lyrics of one of the greatest american songwriters.
.......RIGHT ON!
Check out his son Ben Taylor's new debut CD........with a combination of his talented parents Carly Simon & James Taylor. Ben has not fallen fall from the tree. His own individual style of pop music is a great addition to any music lover's CD collection. I attended his concert back in Feb 2009 here in Kansas City. EXCELLENT!
I love his song entitled.... Its Only Love.
