Music is therapeutic, a teaching tool and more!
There have been a few forum posts here at emPower MA regarding the positive effects of music therapy on autistic kids, but I hadn't heard before today that it is also beneficial to kids with Down Syndrome. According to this article, since music is processed by a different area of the brain than speech and language, a Down Syndrome-afflicted child may be able to more easily absorb information and skills when presented with music. Music is also motivating and fun, which is useful when a child demonstrates low motivation to learn.

It's so logical when you stop to think about it, that kids with disabilities like autism should respond to music therapy. Music is structured and patterned, and the cognitive abilities of autistic people includes a strong inclination toward creating patterns.
A study reported in Nature states that: Mozart's music, by activating task-relevant brain areas, enhances the learning of spatio-temporal rotation tasks.
In plain English, what scientists have proven is music's ability to "warm up" the brain for a learning exercise.
