This is your brain... on music.
Radio Australia broadcasts a show called All In The Mind, and the current program is a very interesting one. "Music: Is It Really Therapeutic?" discusses the health benefits--both psychological and physical--of music therapy with three Australian music therapists, "from the intimacy of a neonatal ward to the ravages of cancer treatment." The podcast is available here. Definitely worth a listen.

By using brain waves of patients with insomnia, psychologists are able to computerize a formula that is translated into musical sounds. The patient listens to this as they go to bed and miraculously it helps them to fall asleep! It is called Brain Music Therapy and is also being used to treat depression and anxiety at clinics world wide.
New Scientist reports identical brain patterns in musicians playing duets. The study of electroencephalogram recordings of various duetting guitarists has revealed that their brains reacted in a very similar manner to a metronome prior to playing together - but once they begin the duet their brains are entirely in sync.
The creative parts of their brain exhibit similar patterns, but what was more interesting was the synchronicity found in other parts of the brain. Also affected were regions of the brain that have been shown to enable people to recognize that others think and act independently, as well as brain "mirror" systems that let people subconsciously mimic the actions and feelings of others.
