I hadn't thought about the 1970s film "Phantom of the Paradise" since...well...the 1970s, until it appeared the other night on HBO. Now, there is nothing remotely POSItive about the film itself--in fact, it may qualify as one of the darkest parodies ever turned out by even Brian DePalma--there are a couple of pieces from the soundtrack, written entirely by the immensely talented Paul Williams, which are just beyond beautiful, notably "Old Souls," which is made even more beautiful by the haunting voice of the little-known Jessica Harper. I found an upload of the entire song someone was kind enough to place on YouTube HERE. For anyone who can't access it, for whatever reason, let me at least treat you to the lyrics: Our love is an old love, baby It's older than all our years I have seen in strange young eyes Familiar tears We're old souls in a new life, baby They gave us a new life to live and learn Some time to touch old friends And still return Our paths have crossed and parted This love affair was started Long, long ago This love survives the ages In its story lives are pages Fill them up, may ours turn slow Our love is a strong love, baby We give it all and still receive And so with empty arms We must still believe All souls last forever So we need never fear goodbye A kiss when I must go No tears In time, we kiss hello

One of my favorite old cult movies.
Paul Williams stars as Satan - a little corny in places but still timeless.
My favorite song is "Upholstery (That's what life is all about!")
Paul Williams is a Posi Award Nominee from the 2006 Posi Awards for a song he co-wrote with JD Martin- Invisible Hands.
It is so good to hear that Paul Williams has still got game. Phantom of the Paradise was my favorite of his works, but I was fond of a lot of those Three Dog Night and Carpenters tunes he wrote as well. Not to mention the unforgettable "Rainbow Connection." How many guys could compose a song that beautiful for a frog? ;)
I had no idea that there were so many other fans of this film. I wore out two vinyl copies of the soundtrack before it came along on CD. And I also had no idea that Paul Williams (one of my favorite composers!) was a Posi nominee. Any chance of seeing him at a future PosiPalooza?
By the way, speaking of favorite tracks, I'd have to go with The Phantom's Theme (Beauty and the Beast). Besides the downright bizarre chord sequences (especially that last note, which leaves the entire piece seeming somehow unfinished), the lyrics are amazing. I would like to follow the OP's example and quote just one verse:
"To work it out, I let them in
All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been
All the devils that disturbed me, and the angels that defeated them somehow
Come together in me now"
